CHARITY EVENT

On Friday May 24th we volunteered at Black Feather Horse Rescue in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Black Feather Horse Rescue is a 501 (c) non-profit organization that has been in operation since 2004. The mission and passion of this rescue is to find abused and neglected animals, particularly horses. The rescue gives them a loving and healing home, earns their trust, cares for their needs and when possible finds them new loving homes.

Darlene Nickerson is the owner of Black Feather Horse Rescue, and runs the entire farm single handedly! She has a few animal loving volunteers who help out here and there, and truly appreciates any and all help she can get. All of the expenses for hay, grain, vet care, farrier, farm up-keep, etc. comes in from donations and Darlene’s personal finances. The farm is currently home to 17 horses, two llamas, two pot belly pigs, goats, and ducks – all of which were at one point in neglect or abuse situations and needed help. Black Feather Horse Rescue stepped in to make a difference and help these animals.

We spent the day cleaning up the farm and helping make the environment cleaner and safer for the animals and volunteers. We raked up old hay, cleaned the pastures and stalls of horse manure, stacked bags of shavings, and tidied up the barn. Our physically strong team members helped take down the wooden boards in the stalls that were up for the winter (that were to insulate the stalls to keep the horses warm). Now the stalls are ready for the nice summer breeze, and the horses will be much happier with the cool air flow as the summer months approach. All of the farm’s water buckets were scrubbed clean and topped off with fresh clean water. Our team finished off the day by giving some of the horses a well-deserved grooming.

Our group picked Black Feather Horse Rescue because animals are part of our wonderful Plymouth community, and they need help too! Darlene, the owner, has a heart of gold and gives everything she’s got for these animals. The least we could do was volunteer for one day on the farm. Although the horses can’t verbally say “Thank you”, we could see the honest appreciation in their gentle eyes. It was a very rewarding day!
