SHP FINANCIAL
FOUNDING PARTNERS
Derek L. Gregoire
Derek Gregoire, Co-founder of SHP Financial, understands that effective financial planning starts with strong relationships. After completing his undergraduate studies in finance at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Derek began working in the insurance industry. While he was grateful for the opportunity to gain experience in the field, he was disheartened by the “one-size-fits-all” approach that he found to be the dominant attitude at many companies.
Inspired by the example of his father, a plasterer who always emphasized the importance of “leaving every situation better than you found it,” Derek knew that there must be a way to connect his lifelong people-first philosophy with effective financial planning. In 2003 he joined forces with a couple of like-minded friends, and they set out to start a company that would provide independent retirement plans through strategies that were rooted in principles of cooperation, service, and faith.
Before he knew it, SHP Financial was a reality. As the company continues to grow, Derek remains deeply committed to the ideals of his father. “I always try to have a servant’s heart,” he says. To Derek, putting the reality of his client’s lives first is not merely an extra feature—it’s the only way he knows how to do business. “If you take care of the small things,” he says, “the bigger things will work themselves out. Sending that extra thank you card, making that extra phone call, doing the little things right adds up to huge success and ultimately comes down to showing people how much you care about them. We make sure that people feel like we saw them and cared about their life.”
SHP’s trademarked process, the SHP Retirement Road Map®, is a tried-and-true guide through the many challenges of income planning, investment management, tax optimization planning, health and long-term care planning, and estate planning.
A budding golfer and lifelong Patriot’s fan, Derek lives in Lakeville, Massachusetts with his wife and two sons. Whether in the office or at home, he credits his Christian faith with granting him the strength that helps him be the best person he can be every single day. He knows how important it is to try new things, to roll with the punches, and to be confident while always staying humble. “My proudest professional achievement,” he says, “is having a true full-planning practice with an amazing team where everybody cares about each other and our clients.”
Matthew C. Peck, CFP® CIMA®
Matthew Peck, CFP®, CIMA®, co-founder of SHP Financial, forged his own unique path into the world of finance. While an undergraduate at the University of Connecticut, Matthew majored in History and English, developing a keen interest in Spanish while he was at it. After graduation, he attended courses at Boston University and became a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®), and later a Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA®) after attending courses at the Wharton Business School at Penn University.
Matthew’s multidisciplinary background remains central to his investment practices. Investments, he explains, are not always about immediate gain. “Historical perspective is key. Long-term planning, being able to see the world through a historical eye, allows me to stay even-keeled and play the long game.”
While he and his co-founders were bringing SHP Financial to life, Matthew loved how they brought out the best in each other. “We all knew that we could go farther together, and we understood how important it was to put the We before the I. We made our mistakes, but we were blazing our own trail. Even today, it’s that same attitude that allows us to tackle things differently, to look at situations with fresh eyes.”
Like all his colleagues at SHP, Matthew believes that a large part of their success is a result of their powerful workplace culture. He still gets emotional when he considers how during times of economic stress, the company not only avoided layoffs but actually managed to continue growing. “Everyone who works here is a rockstar,” he says. Having arrived at SHP from a non-traditional path himself, Matthew knows that every team member is made of more than where they went to school. To him, the most important characteristics are those that go beyond a single discipline: determination, the ability to approach problems from new angles, and steadfast devotion to every client.
Matthew is the author of the book “Mind the Gap: The Cracks in the American Retirement System” and co-author of “SHP Retirement Road Map: Your Map to Financial Freedom.” He is also the co-host of the SHP Retirement Road Map Radio Show.
An avid gardener, Matthew can often be found outside his Dorchester home where he lives with his wife and four children, not far from where he grew up. “Learn like you’re going to live forever,” he says, “live like you’re going to die tomorrow. Keep pushing. You never know what’s possible.”
Keith Ellis
Keith Ellis is a founding member of SHP and an integral part of the growth of the company since 2003. For over two decades he has been dedicated to helping our clients protect not only their current investments but also plan for and protect their retirement. This passion and the motivation behind it are solely attributed to his upbringing.
Hard work and the value behind not only the financial investment but also the time investment were instilled in him from an early age. He proudly comes from a lineage of entrepreneurs, cranberry farmers, and teachers. His learning came from a hands-on approach whether it was bagging cranberries, working at his father’s side, or starting his own lawn care business at nine years old. When you work hard to make your money you want to protect it and know that it will work hard for you later.
The passion that has burned brightest is his desire to teach. That passion has followed Keith throughout his career as he provides financial and investment advice to clients. Clients need to feel educated and empowered when making decisions regarding their retirement. Keith helped to develop the SHP Retirement Road Map® which creates holistic retirement plans that focus on five key areas: income planning, investment management, tax optimization planning, health, and long-term care planning, and estate planning.
Those who place their trust in us should never have to worry about their finances. We spend our entire lives working towards our retirement and want to know that the decisions we make today will pay off and provide for us in the future. Everyone who chooses to work with us deserves to have the confidence and trust in us to do just that for them. Every person who comes to us is unique in their hopes and plans for their future so every road map must be tailored to that.
Keith’s road map is built around the foundation of his life – his family and community. His future rests upon being able to not only support and provide for his wife and their three children, but also continuing to support the causes he believes in such as the Plymouth Council on Aging, Cranberry Hospice/Jordan Health Systems, and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

RECENT
CHARITY EVENT
At SHP it is important for us to donate to organizations that are important to both us and our clients. Unfortunately due to COVID, our charitable giving looks a little different this year. In an effort to support the Boston area during these hard times, we surveyed hundreds of SHP clients to see what charities are near and dear to their hearts. After sorting through all of the nominations, the top three organizations to receive a combined $30,000 are The New England Center and Home for Veterans, The Greater Boston Food Bank, and The Boston Resiliency Fund. These three organizations are doing incredible work for the Boston community and beyond! We learned that our donation will help feed 30,000 people in the Greater Boston area, such an important feat.
